One of the first big things you’re going to want to figure out if you’re doing the Manaslu Circuit is how you’re going to get to where you start the trek. Not like the mainstream trekking trails through Nepal, the Manaslu Circuit in Nepal is remote and not as developed, so to get to the trailhead, you need to do some more planning. The more you get this stuff figured out in advance of leaving, the easier — and less stressed — your journey will begin.
Starting Your Journey from Kathmandu
Every trek in the Manaslu region is the most typical trekking starting from the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, where tourists should also be there to provide service, because this is the city centre for trekking schedules in the country. There are many trekking outfitters in Kathmandu to help get permits and guides for the Manaslu Circuit Trek, but after that, you need to sort out transportation to the trailhead.
Road Travel to Besisahar
Besisahar, a crowded market town and start line for Manaslu Base Camp Trek and the Annapurna Circuit, is the commonplace starting point of the Manaslu trek. Travelers can take a vacation bus or a jeep from Kathmandu to Besishahar. It is a protracted drive of eight to twelve hours, depending on the road and climate. That’s a picturesque meter ride, but a bumpy and slow one, with mountainous territory and the fear of landslides, especially in monsoon season. Once you head out through there, the next decent-sized town is going to be Kathmandu.
Besisahar to Soti Khola: The initial Trek point
Once we reach Besisahar, the actual trek starts from the village of Soti Khola, just a short jeep or local bus ride away. The two roads between Besisahar and Soti Khola, of which the lower quality road can be very bumpy, bring their own adventure to the journey before you even begin trekking. Manaslu Circuit Trek Nepal The Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal begins with trekking from Soti Khola on where you have a chance to visit remote villages, amazing views of mountains. Travel Time & Resources Soti Khola drive time depends on the weather and road conditions, so be prepared for a long and enjoyable journey.

Overland travel is also the best way to see the rugged mountain landscapes that encapsulate the Manaslu trek – in fact, it’s how most trekkers will make their way to the starting point of the Manaslu trek, although some will fly domestically in an effort to save time. There are also domestic flights to Lukla and potentially even Besisahar between Kathmandu and local airstrips, but that latter flight is far less frequent and prone to being cancelled in the event of weather. Then you’d drive from the nearest airstrip to Soti Khola. This will by no means be “cheap” land travel, part of the adventure that can shorten the travel time, as flights are only if the weather permits, and the cost is quite a bit more to physically to travel on land. Public transport across Antarctica does not exist.
Permits and guides are the major Requirements
The Manaslu region is a restricted area, and trekking the circuit requires trekkers to obtain a special permit to start their adventure. These are the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Permits are only available in KTM, and for trekkers, it is also mandatory to hire a registered guide or trekking company for the entire Manaslu Circuit Trek hiking route. These guides don’t just make things easier with permits, but also the logistics of getting to the start of the trek at Soti Khola, for example. This is an official process and ensures the areas are maintained and secured for the sake of this beautiful mountain.
Weather and Road-Readiness Planning
And last but not least, also consider that the weather will also influence the (to the beginning of the trek if you go by road) all travel around the Manaslu Circuit Trek, born in Nepal. It is also possible that roads could be blocked by landslides, creating delays or the need for alternative routes. The roads — at least in the off-monsoon season — are not infrequently unpaved and bumpy around here, and flexibility can be a wonderful thing. In either Kathmandu or Besishar, trekkers generally allocate an extra day for unforeseen setbacks before embarking on the Manaslu Circuit trek.
Last but not least, thoughts when you arrive at Manaslu Trek Starter Point
Sitting on the trailhead of the Manaslu trek, Soti Khola involves some organisation and planning, but it’s an opportunity to see more of Nepal’s cultural and ecological diversity than is available on the highly-trodden tourist legs. From the pandemonium of Kathmandu to the serene village life around Manaslu, the trek is an adventure all the way. Whether you arrive by jeep, bus-hugging onto a twisting tarmac, or choose the airborne and road-based package, the point is to prepare yourself for the important part, which is trekking up to however far you want to take you on the Manaslu!
